You get the feeling after a while that downtown Washington is not a place where people live; it is essentially a place where tourists visit and people work. This gives it a somewhat stale atmosphere, miles away, perhaps, from the loud, young, and colourful America that is promulgated by the media. That isn’t to say it isn’t worth it as a tourist; if cities like new New York and Boston form the heart of America, then Washington is its cold austere brain.
